What does it mean to be Reformed? Minister’s Fraternal 08.03.2005.

Why the need for this question?

In his book The Worship of God: Reformed Concepts of Biblical Worship Joseph A. Piper Jr. discusses what he calls “the worship wars”.

These are debates current in the Church about the nature and practice of worship as a congregational activity. Worship is discussed in the context of its contemporary relevance, modernity, impact upon the unbeliever, use of music and the extent to which it meets the needs of the believer. Such debates are referred to by Piper as “wars” because of the way in which they are conducted and the effects upon the Ministers and churches involved. The context of debate is often one of anxiety and suspicion; anxiety over the perceived condition of the church herself and suspicion of those with alternative views. The effects of such debates are often divisions within and between congregations and a parting of the ways amongst Ministers.

The Loving Father - Luke Chapter 15 verses 11-32 PDF Print E-mail

Main Reading - Luke Chapter 15 verses 11 to 32

This is a transcript of a sermon that was preached on Sunday evening 25th March 2001 by Pastor Neil Evans.

We will look at verses 22, 23 and 24 from our reading in particular.

Let me just start by going over the details of this parable so that we remind ourselves of it even though it is familiar to many of us. A 'certain man' is mentioned in verse 11, and although we are not told much we can gather that he is quite a wealthy man. He is a land owner with many animals and having considerable wealth. This man has two sons, and it appears that the eldest has worked in the family business for some time. The youngest son has not worked but has enjoyed growing up in the family home. He has enjoyed all the privileges and benefits of a comfortable middle class family home. As he grows up the young son realises that all he sees, the house, animals, wealth will in part one day be his. So this parable tells of this young man's understanding that one day he will have a great deal of wealth.

Feeling Alone - 2 Timothy Chapter 4 verses 9-18 PDF Print E-mail

Main Reading - 2 Timothy Chapter 4 verses 9-18
Secondary Reading - Deuteronomy Chapter 31 verses 1-8

This a transcript of a sermon that was preached on Sunday morning 8th October 2000 by Pastor Neil Evans.

I am sure that all of us at certain times in our lives feel very much alone. This morning we are going to be thinking of Paul when he felt alone. You and I, if we were to try and explain why we feel alone at times, wouldn't we say something like this…..what I am going through makes me feel alone, my experiences are very difficult and hard and very unusual and its because of that I feel alone. Or we may say that we feel alone because no one understands what is happening to me. Nobody grasps what I am going through, or you may say no one knows what I am experiencing, I have never felt able to share what I am feeling. Because no one is able to look on the inside and no one can see what is going on so no one can understand what is going on.

Main Reading - Romans Chapter 3 verses 21-26

This is a transcript of a sermon that was preached on Sunday evening 1st October 2000 by Pastor Neil Evans.

We have been studying this section from Romans for the last few weeks and I need not remind you of the importance many scholars place on this section. We have divided these verses into four sections:
Section 1 is verse 21. Section 2 is verses 22 and 23. Last week we started to look at the third section from verses 24 and 25. The last section starts in verse 25 with the words 'to demonstrate His righteousness'; and it ends in verse 26. Last week we took the 3 words justify, freely and grace. This evening we will take the other great word that you have in verse 24, the word 'redemption'. Next week we will look at the word propitiation.
